Journeys-Teithiau

2019- Ongoing

In 2019 a small group of stained glass artists, instigated by Jonothan and Ruth Cooke, started making plans for a new exhibition in the medieval church of Weston, in Wharfedale in the summer of 2020. Six artists are involved;   three based in England, and three in Wales:  Jonathan Cooke, Catrin Davies, Nicola Kantorowicz, Elizabeth Lamont, Rachel Phillips and Christian Ryan.

Journeys: to Wharfe from Thames and Tawe  / Teithiau: I'r Wharfe o'r Tafwys a'r Tawe

Some of us had already started work, developing their ideas and creating designs on the  Journeys theme when COVID intervened. With the world almost at a standstill, the concept more than ever fired the imagination, and it was decided to continue on a different kind of Journey, creating a virtual evolving gallery of work in progress with a  vernissage of finished works in July 2020 to coincide with what would have been the opening of the exhibition.

For my part, this stirring was an opportunity to dwell on and try out the first seedling ideas of free standing and layered glass constructions with rudimentary coldworking and the desire to pursue further. It was lovely to explore these ideas on a small scale combining the beautiful handmade glass I love to use in more playful and contemporary work, free from context.
